Welcome. The next 5 days, we will explore hiking through APU AUSANGATE and the mountains of colors called VINICUNCA. This is an impressive five-day trek in the Vilcabamba mountain range, on a route called "Camino del Apu Ausangate", located in the immediate vicinity of the highest sacred mountains in Cusco. The Apu is the bearer of Life and guardian of one of the most varied ecosystems of untouched mountains in the world. Unlike the Inca Trail, no permission is required for the Ausangate walk. The hike is one of the quietest in the area and you probably will not see another hiker.
The hike offers a variety of wildlife including flying condors, vicuna, bobcats and pumas. The campsites are often next to beautiful blue lakes. You will also have the opportunity to see the Rainbow Mountain! The colorful sandstone mountains in the Vinicunca area is probably the best thing you will see in Peru!
- Hiking in the mountains of Apu Ausangate
- Walk through to the rainbow mountains of vinicunca
- Talk with the local people
- Look at llamas, vicuñas and Andean animals
- Sleep close the sky on the mountains over 4500 m.a.s.l
By booking this trip, you will be helping provide a special Christmas breakfast for low income children in Cusco.
How difficult is the way to Apu Ausangate?
With several viaducts more than 5,000 meters, the road to Apu Ausangate is considered quite difficult. The hike is graded as C means that the ride is quite long and many sections are elevated. You need a good level of physical conditioning and stamina as you will be traveling to many steep sections where the altitude changes significantly over a short span of time. The trail itself is very good and well laid out.
This hike is probably not suitable for hikers without first training. If you are a strong hiker and have completed a few moderate hikes before then, then you should be fine. Often times can become very difficult in the higher regions and storms are certainly not uncommon.
