Peru attracts more tourists from the Andean Community

In view of the tourism promotion efforts deployed by the State, it is observed that more and more tourists arrive from Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia to Peru, countries that make up the Andean Community (CAN), according to the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and the Tourism (PromPerú).

According to information released this week by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), in the first four months of 2019, those who visited Peru from this block totaled 254,454, a figure that represented an increase of 15.37% compared to the 220,556 tourists registered in similar period of 2018.

Between January and April of this year, tourists who arrived in Peru from Ecuador, Colombia and Bolivia increased 19.95%, 2.73% and 25.81%, respectively, in relation to the same period of 2018.

“We observed a positive response from the three issuing markets. We have a strategy – to promote tourism – for each of these countries; Colombia and Ecuador are priorities, “PromPerú Tourism Director, Marisol Acosta, told the Official Gazette El Peruano.

For example, Peru had a relevant presence with tour operators in a Colombian event and similarly the agents of that country participated in the Peru Travel Mart 2019, which was held recently in Lima, which was also attended by representatives of other countries, said .

“Colombians were impressed with the Peruvian tourism proposal and the diversity of options offered to visitors from that country, with which there is excellent connectivity from Bogotá, Cali, Cartagena and Medellín,” he said.

The official explained that the strategy with Ecuador is not only at the level of the main cities issuing tourists, but also the border cities, considering the proximity to the northern regions of Peru such as Tumbes and Piura.

For this Ecuadorian population of Guayaquil and Machala, among other cities, there is a strategy that privileges their dates of rest and vacations. “Tumbes and Piura benefit from this flow of Ecuadorian tourists,” he said.

Preferences and expenses

The activity of the Bolivian visitor is associated to the commercial movement that there is in the border zone with this country and the tourist displacements come from Puno towards Cusco and other zones of the south with diverse attractions, the director of PromPerú said.

He indicated that Ecuadorian tourists, to a greater extent, look for beaches and gastronomy, while Colombians prefer cultural attractions and gastronomy, as well as an urban journey.

The official also stressed that the expenses of Ecuadorian and Bolivian tourists are less than the disbursements of Colombian visitors, because the first arrive in Peru through the border area.

Regarding the supplementary credit, authorized by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), for 82 million 200,000 soles in the 2019 budget, to finance the promotion and development of tourism in the country in favor of Promperú, Acosta said that it will allow compliance with Planning in the field of promotion of the sector.

“The resources will be allocated to various activities already approved in the board of directors and which are linked to promotion and publicity, such as familiarization trips with commercial channels, participation in major international fairs, among others,” he explained.

The Ecuadorian tourist who enters through the Jorge Chávez airport spends 852 dollars and stays six nights, while the one that arrives through Tumbes spends 402 dollars in five nights.

The Colombian visitor spends 918 dollars in our country and stays 11 nights, according to information of the profile of the foreign tourist of 2017.

Seven out of 10 Bolivian tourists enter Peru through Puno; the Bolivian visitor spends 644 dollars and stays seven nights.

Colombia registered an increase of 10.6%; while Ecuador, 9.8%, and Peru, 6.8%. The CAN specified that Bolivia does not have information on containers.
